The Ministry of Production issued a statement announcing that the capture of squid will be suspended starting July 1st for a period of 60 days. This measure is part of the government’s effort to preserve the sustainability of the marine ecosystem and ensure the long-term viability of squid resources, which are vital for both the local economy and export markets.
The announcement has generated mixed reactions among processing plants and exporters. Some plants have adopted a wait and see approach, monitoring how the situation develops before making any operational decisions. These companies are assessing their inventories and considering alternative strategies to maintain supply without violating the new regulation.
On the other hand, several companies continue selling product as usual, fulfilling existing commitments and honoring contracts signed prior to the announcement. These firms are leveraging their stock and cold storage capacity to meet demand during the fishing ban, although there are concerns about potential shortages or price increases in the coming weeks if demand remains strong.
The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has reduced the catch allowed for vessels, which reduces truck load capacity by 60%.
Likewise, only vessels and trucks that comply with these new regulations will be issued the approval documentation to sell to the factories.
The exports will not be permitted to plants that do not comply with the approved documents, and that large fines will be applied to plants and vessels that do not comply with the new regulations.
It is estimated that the price of raw materials will begin to rise in the coming days because there will be less catch.
